Panic Disorders Recovery

About This Service

Panic disorder involves recurrent, unexpected panic attacks and persistent fear of future attacks. At Women Mind Therapy Clinic, we provide specialized treatment to help you overcome panic disorder and associated agoraphobia. Panic attacks involve sudden, intense fear with physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, or feelings of unreality. The unpredictability creates constant anxiety about when the next attack will occur. Many people develop agoraphobia - avoiding situations where panic attacks have occurred or where escape might be difficult. Our evidence-based approach helps you understand panic, manage attacks when they occur, reduce anticipatory anxiety, and gradually reclaim avoided activities. Recovery is absolutely possible.

Symptoms and Concerns We Address

  • Recurrent unexpected panic attacks
  • Persistent worry about future panic attacks
  • Physical symptoms: rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling
  • Fear of losing control or dying during attacks
  • Avoidance of situations where attacks occurred
  • Agoraphobia and limited safe zones
  • Hypervigilance to bodily sensations
  • Significant life limitations

Our Therapeutic Approach

We utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy specifically adapted for panic disorder. Psychoeducation helps you understand that panic attacks, while terrifying, are not dangerous. This knowledge alone reduces some anxiety. Cognitive restructuring challenges catastrophic interpretations of bodily sensations. You'll learn that racing heart doesn't mean heart attack, and dizziness doesn't mean fainting. Interoceptive exposure involves deliberately inducing panic-like sensations (spinning, breathing through straw) in safe contexts to reduce fear of these sensations. Situational exposure gradually addresses avoided situations. We create a hierarchy and systematically practice entering feared situations while using anxiety management techniques. Breathing retraining and relaxation reduce physiological arousal.

What to Expect

Initial assessment explores your panic history, attack frequency, triggers if any, avoidance patterns, and impact on functioning. We provide education about panic physiology and the vicious cycle of panic disorder. Early treatment focuses on understanding panic and learning anxiety management skills. Middle phases involve interoceptive and situational exposure exercises. You'll gradually confront feared situations while learning that panic sensations, though uncomfortable, pass naturally. Most people experience significant improvement in 12-16 sessions with homework practice. Recovery means reduced attack frequency, decreased anticipatory anxiety, and regained life activities.
